Gopali Youth Welfare Society (GYWS) is a registered non-governmental voluntary organization primarily managed by some faculty members and students of IIT Kharagpur, with the support of local members from Gopali. It was established in 2002 with a mission to improve the living standard of the people of Gopali, a village 5 km from IIT Kharagpur. It has been advancing with the twin objectives of making the youth and society aware of and ensuring socio-economic welfare for underprivileged and weaker sections of the society.
Brief description of their activities
Some of the recent projects undertaken by the NGO :
Jagriti Vidya Mandir
Marking illiteracy as its prime concern, GYWS came up with the establishment of Jagriti Vidya Mandir (JVM), an English-medium school aimed at making children educated, and not just literate. Their objective is to provide quality education to underprivileged children free of cost, thus helping them shape their future. Jagriti Vidya Mandir is currently running in the premises of I.M. Educate A Child (EACh)
Many of the students of JVM come from poor families who cannot bear the expenses of their education. To support these children, GYWS launched the ‘Educate A Child’ scheme under which an interested donor can bear the expenses of a single student’s education for an academic year.
Paperkraft
With the aim of empowering women and encouraging their employment and independence, the Paperkraft project was initiated. Under this project, student members of GYWS collect newspapers from the IIT hostels, which are given to women from rural communities. These women make paper bags or thongas from these newspapers, which are sold in the market by our members, and the entire revenue generated is given to the women. The project works on a noprofit no-loss basis.
Awareness Rallies and Workshops
Being a NGO, we truly understand the role of society in an individual’s life. The diverse Social and Environmental profile of our camps and workshops (for instance – MGNREGA awareness camps, candle making workshops, bird flu awareness camps, Health check-ups at JVM) nurtures society and in the long run it evolves into a healthy free-spirited individuals.
What is the project about?
Jagriti Vidya Mandir has been running in a rented campus since its inception. But, as the school has expanded over the years, it faces problems of insufficient time and infrastructure, especially for the higher classes. As a result, a permanent campus for the school is to be established, over which work is already underway.
The project is construction of one classroom for the school.
Project Requirements
Rs. 184125 for one classroom. Details of spending attached.
